Job Title: Clinical Deputy Manager 

Location: Oxford 

Length/Type of Post: Permanent 

Salary: £50,000  

Hours: 12-hour shift per week as RGN then supernumerary hours. Every other weekend. Includes a £2000 welcome bonus: £500 after week 1, £500 after passing probation, £1k after 1 years’ service. Any RGN hours worked above contracted hours per week will be paid at RGN rate of pay of £22 per hour. 

 Our client is rated outstanding by CQC and has a lovely home set in the grounds of a large mature garden with plenty of outside space. Their priority is to deliver the best care possible, with a focus of the happiness of each and every resident.  


Job Overview 

To support the General Manager in the general day- to-day supervision and management of the care provided in the home, ensuring that an excellent standard of care is delivered 

To take responsibility for ensuring that clinical governance is adhered to on a day-to-day basis and that all nursing practices are evidence-based and reflect current trends. To ensure all aspects of the day to day running of nursing care on a 24-hour basis are achieved and that there is RGN cover throughout the 24-hour period. The expectations within the role will be achieved through hands on clinical practice and carrying out general RGN shifts each week 

To ensure all aspects of the management of the home meet with the Fundamental Standards, the requirements of the Care Quality Commission, the NMC Code of Conduct and the Company’s own Aims and Objectives. 

To ensure each resident receives care according to their individual needs. Ensure that all residents are safe from harm and that any possible/potential or actual concerns regarding any form of abuse are reported immediately to the appropriate individuals/bodies. 

To lead on the Berkley Nurse CPD programme in the home, participating in the Berkley Group Clinical Governance Forum

The post holder will act in accordance with the NMC code of conduct at all times. All employees are bound by the Company rules, which are detailed in separate documents. 


Resident Care and Support  

  • To work in conjunction with and under the guidance of the General Manager, to be responsible for overseeing and leading all clinical aspects across the home and be responsible for the care of all nursing residents 
  • To provide clinical support and information to the home management team as required 
  • To lead on clinical review meetings and follow up actions, communicating effectively to the rest of the team 
  • To have day to day responsibility for leading shifts and allocation of duties of staff on our nursing wing, including the day-to-day supervision and management of clinical staff 
  • To ensure residents are correctly assessed, and that care provided is of a high standard and meets NMC guidance and CQC fundamental standards.
  • To assist residents who need assistance with personal care as and when required, working with the clinical and care team to ensure a one-team approach. 
  • To ensure all residents are provided with the highest possible standards of clinical care and support, including end of life care. 
  • To ensure that residents are enabled to fully participate in decisions affecting their lives, embracing the philosophy of person-centeredcare. 
  • Ensure accurate and detailed nursing records are kept that are person-centered
  • Create clear and effective lines of communication and working relationships within the Home and with families, other professionals and agencies involved in the care of the residents, to ensure appropriate nursing care plans are devised to cater for their individual emotional, spiritual, physical and material needs. 
  • To liaise with GP’s and other Health Professionals regarding health care needs, reporting any ill health amongst residents and make requests for GP/Professional visits where necessary. 
  • Ensure that all residents are safe from harm and that any concerns that you suspect, or that have been reported to you, regarding any form of potential abuse or harm, are reported immediately to the General Manager and/or Regional Manager, and instructions followed. 
  • To oversee the medication provision to residents in the home and ensure the correct medication supplied and administered as prescribed and as per Company policy. 
  • Monitor delegation of medication administration by RN’s and care staff regularly. To carry out medication competency checks on team members 
  • Monitor clinical skills delivery and to observe competency to ensure clinical skills standards are maintained. 
  • Liaise with Pharmacists to ensure medication service meets the residents and homes expectations. Ensure that medicines management meets standards and guidance, and all staff practice meets those standards. 
  • To assist the General Manager in maximizing occupancy levels through taking enquiries, marketing the home and leading show rounds as required 
  • To assist the General Manager with the recruitment, appointment and deployment of all clinical (and where required non-clinical) staff in accordance with current and relevant employment legislation 
  • To carry out regular audits as per Company policy, ensuring action plans are developed to address any areas that require improvement and actions are completed and signed off. 


  • To ensure that treatment advice and recommendations from GP’s, Consultants, Pharmacists, Specialist Nurse Advisors and Public Health are documented and communicated effectively to the resident concerned, staff team and relatives, and that treatment/procedures are carried out with the necessary consent which is fully detailed and documented. 
  • To support staff to update and keep individual care plans under continuing review and carry out regular care plan auditing to ensure best practice.
  • To ensure that staff members contribute to the best of their ability to the efficient running of the Home and to the creation of an atmosphere conductive to the best interests of the residents. 
  • To carry out the effective induction, clinical supervision and assessment of clinical staff, including carry out clinical competencies and assessments as required 
  • To support all nurses to complete their portfolio of evidence for Essential Clinical Skills and Practice education 
  • To act as a role model at all times to other staff in the home at all times, ensuring best practice is always followed and promote a culture of learning and continuous improvement.


  • To undertake initial assessments with residents where required, and work in partnership with residents, significant others and multi-disciplinary teams and to make decisions regarding suitability of placements for potential residents 
  • To arrange for the covering of shifts to ensure safe staffing ratios are maintained across the whole home when required, and if all other avenues have been exhausted to stay until cover has been found. 
  • To maintain an awareness of all routines within the Home and undertake general RGN and care work as necessary. 
  • To provide leadership across the whole home in the absence of the General Manager and/or Residential Care Lead
  • To carry out investigations into concerns regarding staff members where required. In the absence of the General Manager and in conjunction with the HR team, implement and manage the Company’s Disciplinary and Grievance policies and procedures. 
  • Arrange, attend and participate in staff and resident’s meetings as and when required. 
  • To be ‘on-call’ for emergencies which may arise within the Home and to cover shifts if other avenues have been exhausted. · Create and maintain a high standard, both aesthetically and safe, within the Home. 
  • To support the General Manager with investigations of any incidents, accidents or complaints that arise. 
  • To undertake root cause analysis investigations for any clinical incidents, completed Section 42 reports and ensure Duty of Candor policies and processes are followed  
  • Assist in ensuring a consistent management approach by implementation and monitoring of all Company policies and procedures. 
  • To travel to other sites within the Company if required. 
  • Undertake any other duties as may be required to assist in the smooth running of the business. To perform other functions related to the role of a Clinical Deputy, or as may be reasonable requested by your Line Manager. This is a minimum requirement as a job specification and can be amended at the discretion of the Manager following appropriate consultation.


Type of candidate we are looking for 


  • Active NMC Registration (PIN Number) 
  • Previous supervisory experience within a nursing home environment 
  • Minimum of three years’ experience as an RGN in a nursing care or similar care setting 
  • Are a Practice Assessor and have experience in this field 
  • Proven ability to lead, supervise, motivate and manage a large team of clinical and non-clinical staff. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including IT skills. 
  • Strong knowledge of NMC code of Conduct and standards and the revalidation process 
  • Strong knowledge and skills in promoting Person Centered Care. 
  • Proven ability to lead, supervise, motivate and manage a large team of staff. 
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to work under pressure. 
  • Strong organisational skills, with a good eye for detail 
  • Excellent communication skills and able to adapt to different levels. 
  • A flexible approach to working hours.


  • NVQ/RMA/Diploma level 5 or equivalent management qualification 
  • Previous experience in a senior clinical role 
  • Good understanding of CQC Fundamental Standards
